TRAM PUSH KILLER GETS FIVE YEARS

- By COLIN HURST news@sundaysport.co.uk

A WOMAN who pushed a man to his death under the wheels of a moving tram has been jailed for five years.

Charissa Brown-Wellington, 31, was arrested on June 12 when 30-year-old Philip Carter was crushed to death after the pair had a row at Manchester Victoria station.

CCTV captured her getting off a tram at about 7.45pm and an argument with Mr Carter, who was holding a bottle of alcohol, soon ensued.

Manchester Crown Court was told that as the defendant got off the tram she was heard to say, “What are you looking at?”

Mr Carter said something back to her, the defendant turned and walked towards him shouting, “You what? what the f**k did you say?”

The row escalated as both told each other to “get the f**k out of my face”.

A push followed with both hands to his chest, which a number of witnesses described as “very excessive” and led to Mr Carter falling off the platform.

Mr Carter suffered multiple crush injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

On her arrival at a local police station after she was arrested, Brown-Wellington, from Oldham, told officers: “He should not have put his finger in my face. All my life I’ve had to put up with men putting their hands around me.”

The court heard the defendant had 65 previous convictions including offences of assaulting police officers, affray and threatening behaviour before she was found guilty of manslaughter.

Judge Mr Justice William Davis said the incident was “no accident”.
