First, the 78-year-old got knocked off his bike when a motorist pulled out in front of him.
His badly injured right leg meant he missed the deadline for the Irish Lottery he plays regularly – and his numbers came up, meaning he missed out on a windfall of £10,000 on Sunday night.
Then, after going out to drown his sorrows over his misfortune, he got home hungry, put on his chip pan and fell asleep, waking up to a smoke and flame-filled kitchen.

“I went to the bookies to put on my lottery numbers, but my leg is still sore, I could only go slowly and missed the deadline by 15 minutes.
“When I found out I had missed out on £10,000, I needed to go out for a drink.
“I bumped into a couple of mates and they took me to places I had never been before. I got drunk.
“So when I got back home and felt hungry, I put on some chips.
“But I fell asleep. The next thing I knew, the smoke alarm went off.
