RADIO host Zoe Ball is the hot favourite to step into Chris Evans’s shoes after he announced he was leaving BBC Radio 2.

Chris, 52, has said he will broadcast his last breakfast show in December after eight years in the prime time slot.

Immediately after he’d made public that he was stepping down, bookmakers installed Zoe, 47, as the most likely to take the reins. Broadcaster Chris shocked fans on Monday when he announced he was returning to Virgin Radio, almost 20 years after he left the station.

Exciting

In an emotional on-air statement he said: “Some of us are mountain climbers and, if you get to the top of your favourite mountain, you become a mountain observer, so I’ve got to keep climbing.

“I’m going to go and go again and I’m going to start up on a brand new adventure. I see nothing but exciting and groundbreaking opportunities ahead.”

The star was recently named second-highest earner at the BBC, according to its annual figures, taking home about £1.7million last year.

And now fellow Radio 2 presenter Zoe, who hosts a live Saturday afternoon show on the station, is the most likely to step in at 5-2 odds.

Currently, the breakfast programme has a weekly audience of more than nine million, making it the UK’s most listenedto radio programme.

Other names who could be in the frame include Sara Cox, 43, Simon Mayo, 59, and Dermot O’Leary, 45, but bookies reckon a female host will take over.
