Back surgeon cut out kidney
A WOMAN who went to hospital for back surgery woke up with one less kidney after a doctor mistook the organ for a tumour.
After suffering for years from back pain from a car accident, Maureen Pacheco checked in to hospital in 2016 to get the bones in her lower back fused.
During surgery, Dr Ramon Vazquez “noticed a pelvic mass and provided a presumptive diagnosis of a gynecologic malignancy, lymphoma, and/or other metastatic disease,” stated an administrative complaint.
Dr Vazquez then clipped and removed it from Pacheco’s body.
But the pelvic mass he thought he noticed was in fact an intact kidney, a pathologist confirmed a month later.
Pacheco, 53, of Wellington, Florida, filed a malpractice claim that has since been settled.
