ONCE upon a time, Fred­die made a good liv­ing out of dress­ing up as a Nazi and speak­ing in an amus­ing Ger­man ac­cent.

Un­for­tu­nately, as Ger­many rose again as a su­per­power af­ter its re­uni­fi­ca­tion, tak­ing the mickey out of the Ger­mans’ geno­ci­dal past be­came po­lit­i­cally in­cor­rect.

And Fred­die’s Sieg Heil salutes be­came “trou­ble­some”.

For­tu­nately, the quick-wit­ted fun­ny­man had a plau­si­ble ex­pla­na­tion.

He told the world he was NOT do­ing a Nazi salute but had merely put his arm out to catch a ham­ster that a pal had thrown for his lunch.
