DISGRACED MP Fiona Onasanya has been jailed for three months for repeatedly lying to police to dodge a speeding ticket. The 35-year-old, who has been kicked out of the Labour Party, has faced repeated calls to quit office since a jury found her guilty of perverting the course of justice.

But the solicitor, who has multiple sclerosis, continues to represent her constituents and is expected to challenge her criminal conviction.

The Peterborough MP – a supporter of leader Jeremy Corbyn’s hardleft wing of the party – was found guilty of lying to investigators after her car was caught doing 41mph in a 30mph zone in July 2017 – just weeks after she won her seat.

She became the first sitting female MP to be jailed after judge Mr Justice Stuart-Smith told her that, despite being a politician, she would be treated the same as anyone else in the country.

Parliamentary rules dictate that MPs jailed for 12 months or more are automatically forced to step down, meaning Onasanya could stay in her £77,000-a-year job while serving time.

However, a recall petition will be launched in her constituency, which can force a by-election if signed by 10% of constituents.
