BLACKPOOL... spiritual home of the traditional seaside holiday.

But in the latest knock to the Jewel of the Fylde Riviera, Blackpool has been described as a “national embarrassment” by a powerful committee of Lords.

Fair enough, the peers are well-meaning and called for more investment in our seaside.

“For too long, seaside towns have been neglected,” declared committee chairman Lord Bassam of Brighton.

Blackpool has been working hard to turn around its fortunes – with a revamped seafront, investment in its trams, a newly electrified direct rail link to London and investment in hotels.

But the town suffered serious deprivation and the focus on developing tourism may have hindered regeneration efforts, the report found.

It’s all well and good focusing on the negatives, but Blackpool has a LOT going for it.

As these amazing photos show…
