TOFFEES ON BRINK OF DITCHING BIG DUNC

- By ANDY MILLOM

VITOR Pereira has emerged as owner Farhad Moshiri’s first choice to take over as Everton manager.

That’s despite the Portugeezer reportedly having been overlooked by the club at least twice before.

Some reports in Europe suggest it’s a done deal with the bookies cutting his price to just 1/3. That would spell the end of caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson’s spell in charge.

The 53-year-old seems a slightly left-field choice to take over. Some fans are concerned about bringing in a boss who has been in charge of a whopping seven clubs in the past decade.

He led Shanghai SIPG to the Chinese Super League in 2018 and took two titles with Porto in his native land and one with Olympiacos in Greece.

But he lasted less than six months in charge of Turkish giants Fenerbahce the second time around and it was a similar story when he was with German side 1860 Munich.

Contract

He seems a strange choice to throw into a Premier League relegation dogfight with an Everton fanbase that wants Duncan Ferguson to get a chance or Wayne Rooney to be brought back.

It’s rumoured that Pereira may be offered a contract until the end of the season only but with the option of an extra year.

Gary Neville thinks Everton should pick up the phone and speak to his former Man United team-mate Rooney.

He has been doing a good job at Derby County and his arrival would give the Toffees fans a massive boost.

Neville said: “I think he’d jump at the chance, obviously. Wayne being asked to be Everton manager, growing up as a fan, a kid there, going back at the end of his career, I don’t think it’d take five minutes for him to go back.

He’d have the passion, he’s obviously got a grounding at Derby and he’s working in difficult circumstances, so he’s getting a good experience.

“But he’d jump at the chance, of course.

“I don’t know what they want, or who they want, or how they’re going to play it at this moment in time the Everton board because you can’t see a plan.”
