Mt Kilimanjaro climb – in fond memory of mum
AKEEN climber is taking on Africa’s highest mountain to raise thousands of pounds for The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity.
Colin Vose, from Crosby, will take on the might of Mount Kilimanjaro next week.
Colin, 55, hopes to ascend the 5,895 metre mountain in five days as a way of saying thank-you to staff at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Wirral who treated his late mum, and to help other people with cancer.
He will make the climb with daughter Kate, 24, and can’t wait to get started.
Colin said: “I have chosen the Clatterbridge Cancer Charity as they looked after my mother Philomena when she was diagnosed with lung cancer.
“They offered support and professionalism when we needed it most. Despite the gravity of her diagnosis and how despondent we felt at the time, the whole experience of Clatterbridge was so uplifting.
“I will never forget the first time we arrived for her radiotherapy, the receptionist came over to us and said ‘Mrs Vose, I have been really looking forward to meeting you’.
“Her consultant was so helpful. I had a question for him one day and he took the time to call me in the evening.
“After everything the staff did I felt they deserved something back.
Colin, a keen mountaineer, has been training in the Alps recently but says he knows the altitude will be the biggest challenge when he gets to Africa.
“It is hard to know how it will affect you before you get there but we have prepared as well as we can,” he said.
Mark Parkinson, events manager for The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, said: “Colin is taking on a massive challenge. Climbing any mountain is a major achievement but Kilimanjaro is something very unique.
“We are very grateful to Colin and everyone who does extraordinary things to help transform cancer care.”
Clatterbridge Cancer Charity is working to raise £15m towards the construction of a new specialist hospital in Liverpool city centre and improvements to the Wirral site.
