Bravery of homeowner who fought armed thugs
ABRAVE man fought off armed thugs who stabbed and slashed at him with knives after forcing their way into his house.
The 29-year-old, who did not want to be named, said he was sat in his living room when a gang of around five men burst in and demanded money.
He said the hooded burglars, who had armed themselves with knives and a spirit level from his kitchen, then grabbed him and told him ‘not to scream’.
However he managed to fight them off, sustaining slash and stab wounds to his head and body, and escape to a neighbours house, who alerted police.
The gang then ransacked his York Street home, in Formby and made off with a Rolex watch, believed to be worth £14,000.
The victim said: “They jumped over the garden back fence and came in through the back door.
“I had no idea anyone was in the house until they came into the front room. I was sat watching TV.
“They had their faces covered and were in tracksuits and hoodies and told me not to scream.
“They had got knives and a spirit level from my kitchen and said they were looking for money.
“When they came towards me and grabbed me I thought they were going to tie me up and I wanted to stop that.
“So I think adrenaline just kicked in really and I started fighting them off.”
During the struggle the victim was stabbed and slashed in the back of his head, his hand, chest and arm.
He bravely managed to escape through his living room window, after he was locked in by his attackers, as they ransacked the upstairs of his home.
He added: “I don’t think they expected me to fight back and sort of backed off when I did.
“There would be many people that would have just screamed and put their hands up to them and I think that is what they were expecting me to do. “They are scumbags. “The fact they went into my kitchen and equipped themselves with my own knives and tried to intimidate me I think is disgusting.”
Merseyside Police confirmed they were called at around 9.40pm to reports of an aggravated burglary.
The men were described as white, of slim build and aged in their late teens or twenties, and were wearing dark-coloured tracksuits with their faces covered.
CCTV from the area is being examined, house to house enquiries have been carried out and the house has been forensically examined.
Detective Inspector Tony O’Brien said: “Being subject to such an assault in his home must have been a terrifying experience for this man.
“We are working hard to piece together the incident and trace those responsible but I am urging anyone who was in the area at the time, or who has any information about this incident to get in contact.
“I’m also appealing to anyone who may have dashcam footage who was in this area at about 9.30pm to get in touch.”
