Arcade home to several start-ups

Midweek Visiter - - Southport Bid -

ONE of the many great delights in writing this column is the opportunity it gives to promote those independent businesses who embody everything that’s good about our town.

Many of them have been here in town for decades.

They’ve been through it all: recessions, the growth of the internet, out-of-town shopping centres.

And, yet, they’re still here demonstrating a loyalty to the town that deserves to be acknowledged.

Many of them can be found in the splendid setting of Wayfarers Arcade.

The arcade was 120 years old earlier this week (October 1) and so to help celebrate that anniversary we’re delighted to showcase several new independent businesses all of whom have chosen to locate there.

This beautifully maintained, attractive Victorian arcade in the centre of our town is renowned for its independent shops.

However, like many shopping destinations the Arcade has for some time had empty units to fill, mirroring the downward trend on the high street nationally where more shops have closed down rather than opening up.

Leading the way to a brighter future in Southport, the arcade has recently welcomed four new shops to join the family of tenants who already occupy stores.

All are unique businesses and will no doubt become destination stores in our town. Joining the ground floor stores are Brick Craft Toys selling Lego including collectors and ‘retired’ items.

They will be holding weekly specialist brick building events every Saturday for children aged 5-16 years.

Next door is Truly Scrumptious Confectionery offering luxury chocolates and confectionery from around the world as well as their own handmade fudge.

Also on the ground level is Strawberry House Pottery selling unique handmade pottery.

Moving on to the first floor is Hypnotherapy North West.

Later this month will see the opening of another new business, The Chair, selling a range of handmade gifts, dried flower arrangements and other unique items.

Nothing breeds success like success and now that retailers are seeing the benefits of moving into this unique arcade we’re expecting more new tenants to be announced shortly.

That’s great news for our town.
