Watson looking forward to big knockout games

MANAGER Liam Watson said his Southport players are ready for a big week of knockout football.

The Sandgrounders travel to Chester FC tonight for a replay in the Buildbase FA Trophy after the sides played out a goalless draw last Saturday afternoon.

And Watson’s team will then start preparing for the Emirates FA Cup second round tie at Tranmere Rovers on Sunday afternoon with a large travelling contingent expected at Prenton Park.

The draw against Chester will not be remembered for its entertainment value but the result sees Southport’s good run continue.

“It was flat at the start, flat during the middle and flat at the end,” Watson said.

“There wasn’t a great deal of quality on show from either side and a goalless draw probably flatters the game.

“A clean sheet is a positive, so too is the fact that we’re in the hat for the next round, but I’m sure both teams will put in better performances. We have another game now on Tuesday. I’m not going to treat the game any differently to Marine, who we were due to play, so the only difference is that we’ve got to go to Chester.

“It’s the best thing in the world to play and any player will tell you that they would rather have a game than training.

“Chester is a good stadium to play at and we’ve got to look forward to it.”
