A talented sew and sew!
THE SDC’s fabulous family pantomime, Cinderella, is almost here.
Cracking costumes have been crafted, terrific tunes are being tweaked and playful performances are being polished.
Dozens of our member volunteers contribute to the annual extravaganza by selling tickets in the run up and throughout as well as staffing the 18 performances to make sure you are fed, watered, seated and safe.
For the production team, the preparation began way back in the summer.
This year we were delighted to welcome back the wickedly talented Christopher Rimmer as musical director, accomplished choreographer Corinna Davies and exceptionally capable director Kate Miles-Roberts.
Kate is a multi-skilled member of the SDC and a natural choice for taking the lead with this show.
Our current chair, Les Gomersall, is supporting her as assistant director; a role reversal of their directorial collaboration in last season’s Be My Baby.
Kate has always had a love of panto.
She started very early playing Ali Baba’s chief thief at the age of six.
She’s gone on to steal scenes ever since!
Her SDC panto history began in 2011 and she has fulfilled a number of roles ranging from appearing on stage in Goldilocks and the Three Bears and assistant directing Sleeping Beauty.
She’s created countless costumes as part of our wonderful wardrobe department, known collectively as the sewing elves.
Her first foray was as a crew member for Cinderella last time the club performed it: she has such fond memories of this time that she was delighted to step up to direct this year.
The original script is courtesy of the gifted Stephen Hughes-Alty.
Kate has developed it to best suit her company and bring the references up to date.
During the rehearsal process it has evolved further as she works with her players to make the show sparkle.
Her organisation and vision have made for a smooth rehearsal period; the panto family are all looking forward to showing you the fruits of their labours and making their director proud!
All this, and she is still performing ‘sewing elf’ duties as well as being a businesswoman and raising her young son with her husband, fellow SDC member, actor and director Adrian Miles-Roberts.
Their teamwork on and offstage means they can enjoy their hobby, support the club and still have family time too.
Cinderella opens on Thursday, December 20 and runs until Sunday, January 6.
