Police officer’s hand bitten in street attack
A POLICE officer was attacked and bitten on the hand in a Bootle street.
A video shows a man charging at the officer, wrestling with him and then throwing a barrage of punches.
The officer was taken to hospital after the attack.
The incident happened in Hero Street, Bootle.
The clip – shared widely on social media – begins with a man charging at the officer in the street. The officer appears to use a baton to defend himself, and is then slammed up against a parked car.
A member of the public then attempts to intervene, and tries to pull the attacker off the police officer. The attacker then throws punches at the officer, who staggers back.
At this point, police support arrives, and the attacker is apprehended.
A police spokesman said they were called out to a house in Hero Street following reports of a dispute at around 1am. After police tried to calm the situation, an officer was assaulted.
Pollice said the officer was punched and bitten on the hand. He was taken to hospital for treatment but later discharged.
The spokesman said: “Merseyside Police are investigating an allegation of assault on an officer which is reported to have happened on Hero Street, Bootle. The incident was reported to us shortly after 1am on Thursday, December 27.
“Police were called to a residential property following reports that there was an ongoing dispute. On police arrival, after trying to defuse the situation, one officer was assaulted which resulted in him being punched and receiving bite injuries to his hand. He was taken to hospital for examin-ation and has since been discharged.”
Police said a man had been charged with assault of an emergency worker and common assault of an emergency worker. He has been released on conditional bail until January 25.
