THE FROZEN CITY
For this months Community Corner, we’ve headed into the world of Frostgrave with Ben Joy and his Necromancer, Apprentice and warband ready to journey to the city of Felstad. “The warband is made up using minis from Games Workshop’s Mordheim range, Copplestone Castings, Northumbrian Tin Soldier, Grimforge, Reaper Bones and the Frostgrave range of plastics from North Star. The Frostgrave minis were made using a mixture of the barbarian and cultist kits, with some extra bits from the bits box thrown in.”
Ben then painted these with a variety of paints from Games Workshop, Turbo Dork, Warcolours and Instar, which he then thinned with Painter’s Milk from The Painter’s Bakery. “Each mini was painted by applying the base colours, followed by a generous covering of Nuln Oil. Once that dried highlights were applied using paints thinned down using the Painter’s Milk, which is a medium, flow aid and matting agent all rolled into one. The bases were made using Hirst Arts large cobblestone mould, cut down to fit on a plastic base. These were undercoated black with a grey drybrush applied, followed by a lighter drybrushing of white.” And, for the all important frost effect? “The frost effect was achieved by using the New Liquid Frost from Green Stuff World, which I’m still practicing with but looks great for adding realistic looking frost to minis, bases and terrain.”
Ben has also found ways to play despite the current situation, saying “they’ll soon be getting plenty of use in solo games, as well as games played via video call using an overhead camera on a frame I’ve built myself and an ‘action cam’ mounted on an adjustable arm (Videograve, if you will). I might even try and convince my Fiancée to play another game or two, now that she has learnt to play during lockdown!”
