Miniature Wargames

IT’S HOT, IT’S MEAN!

I’ll confess it’s been a long time since I put together a model of a really big dragon – a five inch tall Citadel creature. Last month’s Forward Observer showed Modiphius’ newest released in their Elder Scrolls: A Call to Arms Miniatures range: an excellent looking new dragon called Mirmulnir. Well a picture is all very well but they kindly sent me a model to assemble.

In 14 bits plus a base, construction is no mean feat. Cast in Modiphius’ standard, superbly crisp, grey resin, each piece comes with a sprue tab to remove but – other than that – there’s no clean up: not even a whisper of flash was present on mine, never mind mould lines. Fit varied slightly: the legs, and feet especially (each with two extra stick-on toes to make a three-toed claw) were excellent and the wings were pretty good with a large glue surface for a strong model. I found some of the tail and body parts slightly more of a faff to fit but – as they are highly detailed with overlapping scales and so forth – there was a fair degree of latitude and they required minimal filling. I did all of my construction using superglue with baking soda as a filing agent so I’m not sure it’ll need much putty – if any – on the joints and, when I’m in a position to start laying down primer, we’ll see what’s needed.

My assembled model is bigger than I’d estimated being 260mm (on an intricate 100mm diameter sculpted round base) but – if one were to stretch the creature out to full length – he’d be around 350mm. An astonishing model!
