HUNT FOR THE PROMETHEUS

We mentioned the release of this new Dystopian Wars set from Warcradle Studio in Forward Observer in issue 454 and we now have one for a proper review. Space is limited so I am going to have to be concise. £85 is quite a lot of money for a game but you get an awful lot in a very nice box. That includes loads of models for this particular slant on ‘Steam-punk’ Naval battles; plus rules and a campaign that details the theft of the prototype Hypatia Class Generator ship by a Russian double agent.

The Hunt for the Prometheus aims to walk players through the rules of Dystopian Wars game by game, building up to a two fleet grand finale. The box has eight large injection sprues with more water-line ship models than I could count (I think there’s about twenty seven) plus three large resin ships: although all of the ships are all well detailed the resin castings are particularly finely done with just a wealth of detail to paint and drybrush, plus turrets galore. Many of the injection plastic models can be built in various classes to add variety and also look very nice.

On top of that is a well produced, 150 page, A5 rule book; the Prometheus campaign book (A5, eight pages); two bespoke card decks (120 cards in total) an injection plastic template set; 40 d6 action dice plus a dozen (slightly larger) d6 critical dice; plus three sets of tokens including the intriguingly titled “Iceberg & Physeter Construction Token Set”.

It’s a great day when a system like this is given a second chance – indeed a better chance – at life and I do hope that it’s a success.
