This is a beautiful book and a wargames scenario writer’s delight! The format has the facing page as a map and the accompanying text describing the action on the left. All odd page numbers have a map until the two-page epilogue and cavalry orders of battle in the appendix and endnotes. The maps themselves contain an operational map to show context and large scale maps (approximately 1 cm to 150-250 yards). Perfect!

The actions covered are those that encompass the Gettysburg campaign starting with Brandy Station (9 June) (Map Sets 1-4). This covers the action in four chapters consisting of 18 maps; detail indeed. Other actions are: Aldie (15-17 June), Middleburg (17-19 June), Upperville (21 June), General Stuart’s independent raid, the Federal Cavalry move north, then all the battles in and around Gettysburg (Map sets 10-13) followed by the Confederate withdrawal, the fight for the wagons and withdrawal of Kilpatrick’s division to Williamsport (Map sets 14-15), and finally chasing Lee across the Potomac.

This is terrific book! One in a series of eight military atlases of the American Civil War. It is very strongly recommended for all readers.
