This book largely consists of photographs accompanied by explanatory text. It has a variety of pictures of the Supermarine flying boats both construction and in service with the RAF, together with a company history. The photographs, particularly of the Supermarine Southampton are extensively captioned leading to an interesting narrative but the application of this book to wargaming must be considered peripheral at best. It is ideal for the aviation enthusiast and modeller. The Supermarine Southampton served in the RAF from 1925 to 1935 and pioneered the route to the Far East and Australia.
The aircraft industry in the 1920s and early 1930s was akin to a cottage industry with aircraft hand crafted, much like small boats, and the construction pictures show this very well. The aircraft was also sold to foreign navies including Argentina and the Imperial Japanese Navy and the Australian Air Force.
This is an interesting book but more for the specialist in aviation or the modeller; it is recommended for both. The aircraft did not see any significant action being retired from British service just before the beginning of the Second World War.
