Deep Cut Studio have just released another new mat style in their comprehensive, printed mat range and they kindly sent me one of their premium, neoprene versions. What’s the terrain type for tonight? Mountains!

For those who like their games cold and frosty – maybe set in a frozen kingdom or the city of Frostgrave – then maybe simple snow just won’t do. I mean why stick to just a white cloth or even a printed one with speckled snow and the odd bit of bush poking through? This new cloth takes care of that with some stunning printing. There is a lot of snow shown – as you’d probably hope there would be – and it has a rippled, wind-blown surface texture that’s very evocative. However, there’s also a lot of sharp rocks, slippery peaks and cracked surfaces represented in an enhanced, photographic style that really makes for a convincing play area.

As with all of the Deep Cut mats, you are spoiled for choice in both size and materials: at just over thirty Euros you can have a 3ft square mat on cloth which – I have to say – if storage is an issue for you is the option I’d pick. Or you can go up to a 6 x 4 on neoprene rubber – great for laying over uneven surfaces and getting a flat, non slip playing surface – for a smidge under seventy Euros. There’s also the PVC version which as the advantage of being wipe clean and some folks like drawing on their mats with wipe off pens. It’s also worth remembering that – if your chosen game system would benefit from a grid or hex pattern overlay – Deep Cut can do just that with their Print-O-Mat on line system.
