Last month in Forward Observer

we mentioned that the company Spellcrow – although based in Poland – were operating in a big way from the UK and their range was touched upon: 28mm fantasy with unique sculpts plus conversion components along with game systems and more.

I have three boxes of 28mm minis and I’ll start with the Dwarves of Thargomind and the Northern Dwarves.

Both boxes contain similar models: flawlessly cast in grey resin they come with plain, square plastic slot bases and are generally of the (what I would define as) slightly comedic, sub-Warhammer style: lots of beards and not too much in the way of upper legs. They are heavily muscled and determined looking and some need a little assembly (with the odd arm to stick on) although most do not. Height wise that are all at least 25mm tall and – for equipment load out – they all carry swords, axes or hammers with the exception of one with a blunderbuss and another – in the Northern Dwarves box – with what looks like a hand held flame thrower. The Thargomind Dwarves have more armour and shields while the Northern Dwarves have a certain Celtic resonance about them.

The box of Gnomes are maybe a tad smaller and have some women amongst the set: certainly the figure dressed as an operatic Viking (think: “Kill the Wabbit”) and the model with the spear and owl are obviously female, but there’s also a chap with a great steam punk rifle and a pipe. All sets have six figures in a very nicely produced and illustrated box and – if this old school charm is your bag – they are great models. Next month: Goblins, Hobgoblins, Wood Elves and Halflings!
