THIS MONTH IN HISTORY FLODDEN
9 SEPTEMBER 1513
The Battle of Flodden Field was during the War of the League of Cambrai between England and Scotland: in terms of troop numbers (approximately 34,000 Scots versus 8,000 English) it was the largest battle fought between the two kingdoms and resulted in an English victory. Fought near Branxton in Northumberland the Scots army were led by King James IV whilst the English were commanded by the Earl of Surrey. Despite it being one of the first major engagements in the British Isles where artillery was significantly deployed, Flodden is seen as a victory for the English Bill armed troops over the Scottish pikes.
