MINIATURE MEN 28MM

When perusing the interweb (as one does) I came across some folks who are making some unusual figures in what I would say are another ‘very traditional’ look. That doesn’t mean 30mm Spencer Smith or 25mm Minifigs, all of which I remember from my youth, but these harken back to the sort of models I was reviewing in the mid-eighties when I first started writing for magazines.

The slight problem is that – what with being quite a new company – Miniature Men operate in a very 21st century fashion. They have a blog (of course) an eBay store (ebay.co.uk/str/ miniaturemenandcomponents) and (it goes without saying) that they have launched some Kickstarters (kickstarter.com/projects/ rob1/robyns-hoodies-and-the-sheriffshenchmen). What that makes, though, is a hard life for a reviewer who just wants to get some figures and look them over. Fortunately, the folks behind the product – Gary and Alison – have made this easier by sending me some samples!

Described on their (fully funded) Kickstarter succinctly as“28mm hand sculpted white metal fantasy miniatures inspired by The Legends of Robin Hood... with a gender twist” Robyn’s Hoodies & The Sheriff’s Henchmen are around 32mm tall on average and are obviously sculpted in putty in the traditional way. Weapons are big and chunky (the hafts on spears and the thickness of the bows are all... impressive!) and – add-on shield aside – they tend to be single-part castings in easy-to-paint (and cast) poses. Detail is a little soft but they are chunky and should paint up well. I’m not sure what other modern figures they would match in with (they remind me of older Essex, Chronicle or Dixon minis in style) but price is £2 each or £7 for a set of four.
