Redcoat History is the brainchild of Chris Parkinson, a South African based journalist and film-maker, and it covers the history of the British army from the Napoleonic Wars to the First World War. Parkinson clearly loves his subject and that deep affection oozes from every pore.

What sets Redcoat History apart is how focused it is. Most podcasts cover a variety of topics, but Parkinson – while he does the odd stand alone episode – organises the podcast into seasons. Each season is dedicated to a particular conflict: there have been three so far and they cover the Zulu war, the Plassey campaign and the Peninsula War. Each season will give a good grounding in the basics of the period. For example, each of the major battles of the Zulu war get their own episode and there are extra episodes, usually featuring Rob of the British Muzzleloaders YouTube channel, on the weapons. Parkinson will also interview experts like Rob Griffith author of Riflemen (a history of the 5/60th Royal Americans) who delivers an absorbing talk on the role of that multinational unit in Wellington’s campaign.
