ARMY PAINTER MEGA-AIR

Last month in Forward Observer we mentioned that a huge box of paint had arrived from Army Painter. The Warpaints Air Mega Set is impressive with 50 paints arranged in three colour triads, nine metallics and I wanted to try them out both in an airbrush and as brush paint. On that basis I’ve had Mirmulnir – an Elder Scrolls dragon by Modiphius

– staring at me in my study for ten months and I thought it was about time I got some paint on it!

Using entirely Army Painter products – the Air Mega Set plus their Washes (Blue, Red, Flesh and Soft), Colour Primer

(Ultramarine Blue) and their brushes (including their excellent Dry Brush set) – I set about it and the results are here for all to see. Colours are bright and I used the Ultramarine Blue and Ionic Blue for shading; Leather Brown, Skeleton Bone and Bleached Bone (plus a little white) for the wing skin and horns; and Alien and Coven Purple for the belly and face. The lighter colours were airbrushed on and then dry-brushed to highlight them. The appropriate washes were used over this and then the head had Daemonic Yellow eyes and a Pure Red and Pixie Pink tongue and mouth, all washed with Red wash.

The brush painting and dry-brushing worked well, despite the products being ‘airbrush paint’. They are quite thin (obviously) but that usually makes for good, two coat, smooth painting (not something I normally excel at...). But they even dry-brush well if you leave them to dry on the palate a little. If I had to buy just one set of paints for airbrush and other needs, this would be a very strong contender. Highly recommended.
