THIS MONTH IN HISTORY TOWTON
29TH MARCH 1461
Possibly the bloodiest battle ever fought on English soil the huge armies, estimated at between 50,000 – 65,000 confronted each other in a snowstorm in a field between Towton and Saxton. After a long day of fighting the Lancastrian line finally crumbled and were cut down as they fled or surrendered (even knights). It was a decisive victory for the Yorkists with the Lancastrians death toll said to number 28,000. It would be another 25 years before the political struggle and fighting would finally end.
