RETURN TO THE CONGREGATION
This month – fresh from the Last Word in the previous issue (and his ‘coming back into the fold’ of miniatures) – we caught up with the Editor of our sister publication, Tabletop Gaming Magazine: Christopher John Eggett. Chris is heading back into the painting of miniatures and he’s here to tell us all about it.
“I’ve spent a long time away from the painting side of the hobby” He admits, time having been absorbed by frequent but differing gaming, “But having recently returned in an attempt to be able to play more solo skirmish games, I invested in some 15mm Hordes of Things fantasy models, plus a few Japanese Fantasy figures. In short, I got all the weird stuff that seemed useful.
“The idea was to have a few multipurpose units that could work as ‘bad guys’ in various fantasy skirmish games, or stand in for roleplaying games when needed. I went for 15mm as it firstly offered amusing differences in sizes if I wanted to drop something big into the game, and it’s also incredibly cheap. My nearly four warbands came in at less than most pub lunches!
“So far I have painted a few skeletons (or ghouls); some minotaur (all-purpose beastmen); a group of heroes (anti-paladins and a couple of odd ones); and – although I haven’t go them in front of a camera yet – there are some orcs.
“I base coated in black, and then used a mix of Scale75 and Turbo Dork paints for the majority of the models. I’m particularly fond of the Turbo Dork
sparkly colours: the Golden Knight is primarily painted in Turbo Dork’s ‘Cartridge Family’, and Scale75
seem to offer the muted tones I like for everything else. “I’ve attempted some blending with the devil flesh tones and the blue clothing for the beastmen. The ghosts (my personal favourites) and skeletons were a mix of dry brushing and highlighting.
“Overall I’m pleased with this set of totally serviceable skirmish miniatures that I can drop into any fantasy game. But I’m also aware I’ve fallen into the trap that there could just be just one more miniature or warband required to complete the collection…” Welcome back to the insanity Chris! Ed.
