CONQUISTADORS & AZTECS

- wargamesatlantic.com £25

They are here at last! After relocating their production facilities to the US (from China) Wargames Atlantic’s Aztecs and Conquistadors have finally arrived. Produced in their Renaissance (Gunpowder, Mercenaries & Kings) range, each is a boxed set of hard styrene models in 28mm‘scale’. As usual for this range they come with minimal oval bases integrally moulded on to the torsos and with separate‘ weapon is ed’ arms, heads, shields and so forth.

The Conquistadors box allows you to build two dozen soldiers equipped with sword, spear, halberd, crossbow, and musket with additional options for pike and two-handed swords. A mix of hat and helmet types will mean that they can find lots of use on the battlefields of Europe in the 16th century so this is a very flexible set. Each box has eight frames: four full sprues with six different torsos on each (all in a standing or advancing pose) with twelve heads and items like a drum, plus four half sprues with even more weapons and nine additional heads.

For the same price as the Conquistadors you get even more figures with the Aztecs: thirty, all told. They are all warriors equipped with bow, atlatl, machuahuitl, spears, slings, and more along with a variety of body and head types. There are also shields – with and without feathers – plus feathered head dress bits and bobs. There are, again, six torso types and two of the them have the full ‘animal suit’outfit (with suitable heads to fit in with that). There are also components to build command figures.

The fit of all of these figures is, I think, pretty good. They are exceptional value for money at a quid each (or less for the Aztecs) and they look very good when assembled en mass which is easy to do at this price. But they are even better value when you can buy them at a reduction for bulk: three boxes for £70; five for £105; or ten for £190. Highly recommended.
