A very topical book given the, as I write, Russian invasion of Ukraine, this recounts the work of the Royal Navy in supporting the Baltic States in their struggle for independence from Soviet Russia. During it they fought the Soviet Baltic Fleet on several occasions in a tale of hostilities that has had little visibility, lost in the ending of the First World War.
It is related here in a well written and fascinating account of the naval campaign covering such successes as the Coastal Motorboat attack into Kronstadt harbour and destroyer clashes. It reviews the operational ships of both sides, including the Soviet dreadnought Petropavlovsk, and covers something of their history, characteristics, and challenges to operations. Supported by many photographs and side views of the ships of both sides involved in the conflict, it is a great read.
For the wargamer there is inspiration for scenarios based on real life with the small forces present meaning they can be set up easily and at little cost covering sea and land warfare. Overall, this is an outstanding primer by a well-known and acclaimed naval author which sheds light on a little-known campaign.
Strongly recommended.
