Problem shared...

-

Interesting to read the articles by Geoff Skerry and Nick Fisher (May issue) regarding problems with a sticking clutch.

I had a similar problem last year with my 2005 Peugeot Boxer Auto-Sleeper. I also had to keep lifting the clutch pedal back up with my foot after changing gear until it came to a sudden climactic failure.

I was just going into a roundabout, changing gears, when the clutch pedal hit the floor with no pressure.

The engine automatically cut out (still don’t know why and it wouldn’t restart).

I was fortunate the motorhome continued rolling to a safe spot. I somehow got it into gear, but that, too, caused a problem. It was now stuck in gear and, therefore, despite many offers of help, the motorhome could not be towed off the roundabout.

Fortunately, the recovery truck driver skilfully used his winch, got it out of gear and rescued us.

Anyway, the problem turned out to be a corroded clutch hydraulic pipe that eventually burst. It is reckoned that there was possibly a pinhole leak causing an intermittent loss of hydraulic pressure, which is why the clutch pedal occasionally need lifting back up with my foot.

About two foot of the pipe was replaced, cutting out the corroded/burst section and we were back on the road.

It’s a horrible sinking feeling when something goes wrong and at the time we always think of the worst but, thanks to MMM magazine, and as the saying goes, ‘a problem shared is a problem halved’.
