What’s a fair premium?
My wife and I are looking forward to purchasing our first motorhome and are already planning trips around the UK and hopefully further afield.
I have been buying MMM monthly and now feel more confident in the type of layout I require. I want twin beds at the rear, a drop-down bed at the front, a separate shower, a large garage and it needs to be 3,500kg in weight.
My budget is £60,000 and I’m still undecided on whether to purchase new or used.
I recently contacted Shield Total Insurance for a quote.
I gave it a registration number for a motorhome I saw on Auto Trader, an Etrusco 17400 SB (20 reg).
I was asked if the vehicle had an immobiliser/alarm and I answered yes to both.
I said I would have a tracker fitted and it would be securely parked on my driveway.
I have a clean driving licence and have made no claims on my car insurance – I was quoted £1,449 for the year.
I was shocked by this amount as I was expecting to pay approximately half of this.
The car I presently have is a 2-litre GLA Mercedes 2018 and I pay less than £400 a year to insure it.
Is this a fair price for a first-time motorhome owner?
I am reluctant to ring around due to the amount of information companies require until I find the motorhome I want to purchase!
I would welcome your, and other readers’ opinions and advice on insurance.

ED Insurers do offer varying levels of cover and extras ( foreign travel, personal effects cover), and factors like base vehicle, postcode, etc, will all have an effect on the premium. This is why it is so important to have a motorhome-specific policy that meets your needs.
