Readers review campsites from West Sussex to the Netherlands

Arundel Castle, Chichester Cathedral, the South Downs, the wonderful village of Bosham, the Witterings, Pagham Harbour and… Bognor Regis! What have they all got in common? They are all in West Sussex and all are within easy reach of this site!

You are made to feel incredibly welcome by the owner, who runs through everything you need to know about the campsite. Types of pitch, electric hook-up, toilet and shower facilities, shop and pub/restaurant. She also shows you the direct access to the River Arun.

Southbound, the riverside walk leads to Littlehampton and northbound to Arundel, both around three miles away. Littlehampton is an easy-going seaside resort with a pleasant harbourside walk and seafront promenade, whilst delightful Arundel boasts many fine buildings, overlooked by the magnificent cathedral and castle. If you prefer, you can cycle to both easily and safely. Or, if that’s not your bag, then the train from nearby Ford railway station will whisk you to either in minutes.

The campsite’s only downside is its proximity to the railway bridge over the Arun, with trains clattering across but, put that aside and enjoy the fact that said railway (cycles travel free) can have you at Chichester, with its cathedral and canal, in 10 minutes.

A further five minutes and you’re at Fishbourne, where the remains of the Roman palace are a top draw. Five minutes more and it’s Bosham. Although the station here is a couple of miles walk or cycle from the village, it is worth every bit of effort.

No words can capture the beautiful setting alongside the natural Chichester Harbour, with the quirky fact that one of its roads disappears and reappears with the changing tides. A bus runs directly from Chichester, but this, and the Witterings to the south, is cycling country using the captivating Itchenor Ferry, before returning via the Salterns Way cycle path and alongside the Chichester Canal to Chichester. The total round trip is about

20 miles of easy cycling.

If you still have time to kill after all that, then

Portsmouth and

Brighton are easily reachable on the train. What’s not to like?
