Sytche Caravan and Camping, Shropshire
This campsite sits beside the lovely small Shropshire town of Much Wenlock, clearly signposted up a short stone track.
I arrived before opening time and was happy to wait, but the lady from reception kindly welcomed me in, waving away my apologies.
You are shown to your pitch (grass or hardstanding) on this wellmaintained terraced site, where some pitches need a step or levelling blocks. Pitches are generously wide and all come with views out over the rolling Shropshire hills.
Facilities are very clean, well maintained and housed within an older structure. There are washing-up facilities that include a handy fridge and microwave. There is also a good WiFi signal. Although there is provision for grey water disposal, there’s no drive-over grid or manhole.
The site is but a five-minute easy walk into Much Wenlock, a place full of history. It was here that the town’s most famous son, Dr William Penny Brookes, organised the Olympic
Games in the 1850s. There’s a trail around the town giving further details. Along the trail is the town’s atmospheric guildhall, built in 1540 and open for free to the public.
Just down the quaint street is the even older Wenlock Priory. There are also a number of attractive independent shops, tea houses and restaurants and pubs.
Direct from the site, there is some excellent walking to be done, including up onto Wenlock Edge with views far across the Welsh Marches.
Only some seven miles away is the World Heritage Site of Ironbridge and Coalbrookdale, often recognised as the place where the Industrial Revolution really began to bring the world out of medieval times and into a new age. It’s easy to drive to and equally easy to reach by bicycle along quiet roads and along the River Severn – though there’s a very steep descent into the gorge.
Sytche campsite is quite basic in some ways but is very well and securely managed and maintained by friendly, helpful people. It provides an excellent convenient location for many interests and activities and is both popular and peaceful.
