Dissolving chassis

-

In reply to Eric Evans’ rustproofing letter (Nov 2021, p11), I own a 2003 Fiat 2.8 JTD.

Around three-plus years ago, after changing local garages, I was informed that the radiator support bracket had rusted and was advised to have it replaced.

This work was carried out, but on collection I was advised to sell the motorhome because they said several parts of the chassis had disappeared.

Panic! I had owned the vehicle from new, an Auto-Trail 635 SE. A local garage quoted £1,000 minimum, saying as work progressed this amount could rise. It had recently repaired a similar vehicle, with welding repairs costing £1,500.

Back to the drawing board. I seemed to recall reading in MMM of someone having a similar problem and getting it resolved by Rust Busters in Poole, Dorset.

Enquiring by phone, I was given a quote to steam clean the complete cab and whole chassis, then completely underseal the vehicle for £1,000.

The welding would require an inspection. Arranging a date, I drove to the premises and stayed overnight. Within an hour of the vehicle being put on the ramp, there was very little chassis left on the offside. The majority of it was removed by hand and the wheelarches were like tissue paper.

It took a while to take in what was happening. Should I have sold it? Well, that’s too late as it was now not safe.

Approximately three weeks later, the vehicle was collected. The cost of welding was £1,800, so a total of £2,800. One small bonus is that the underseal has cured the rising damp inside around the wheelarches.

The vehicle was dirty on collection, otherwise I’m totally happy with the work carried out. I’ve still got the motorhome, too.
