Ty Mawr Camping and Caravanning Site, Shropshire
What an idyllic spot! That was my first thought as we arrived at Ty Mawr on the Llangollen branch of the Shropshire Union Canal. Colourful narrowboats were gliding by, there was loads of room and the only sound was that of birdsong.
The Camping and Caravanning Club calls Ty Mawr, one of its Certificated Sites, a ‘hideaway’. It’s an absolutely perfect description. You need to be a club member to stay, but you can join on site.
Walking (you can cycle) the short distance (less than a mile) westwards along the towpath took us to Cole Mere, the second largest of the glacial meres in what’s referred to as ‘Shropshire’s Lake District’. Continue on the towpath to Blake Mere and (using other paths) to Newton Mere or The Mere in Ellesmere itself, the largest and most popular lake with picnic benches, a playground and refreshments. Hawkestone Park Follies, where we love exploring the wonderful gullies, caves, towers and bridges (and follies!), is about seven miles away.
Fishermen are also in their element at Ty Mawr as you can fish the canal directly from the site (subject to a rod licence). Ellesmere, three miles away, has supermarkets, pubs and eateries, but the farm just down the lane sells fresh eggs and local produce.
If you enjoy watching wildlife, there is plenty at Ty Mawr. Part of the site is a wild meadow to encourage birds and other animals. You can bring your dog to Ty Mawr, but it must be kept on a lead at all times.
The grassed site, over about three acres, is flat, neatly mown and mostly sheltered, with two areas; the large open meadow by the canal or a smaller and more secluded field with more trees.
The owner is very friendly, helpful and informative. Facilities include an electric shower (£1), toilets, freezer and dishwashing area, grey/waste water emptying and electric hook-ups.
If you want to relax and enjoy a slower pace of life then Ty Mawr is just the place!
