What to buy?

-

My wife and I owned a Niesmann+Bischoff Arto as our first motorhome, with a drop-down bed. As we got older, we struggled with the ladder getting into bed.

We then bought an AutoSleeper Burford French bed with separating washroom and bedroom doors, which was great, but we found the bed a bit too small.

We are now thinking of a twin-axle Hobby 750 with twin single beds and rear washroom.

Can you offer any help and advice with our search?

ED Yes, the Hobby 750 might suit you – they were quite a popular and desirable model in their day.

However, I would always caution against seeking out a specific model when buying used as you might wait months (even years) for the right motorhome to come onto the market (right price, right mileage, right condition, etc) and, when it does, it might be at the opposite end of the country.

Also, are sure that you want something as big as the 750? These tag-axle motorhomes are very stable on the road, but they do have a huge turning circle and so can be quite hard to manoeuvre.

I would suggest that you’re looking for either an island bed layout or low-level twin singles, from your comments, and there should be a variety of motorhomes that suit.

However, bed sizes should always be checked in person – lie on the beds, wriggle around and see if there is really enough room for you both.

Then check out the space in other areas, such as the shower and toilet, and make sure that the motorhome has all your other ‘must have’ features.

You might start by looking at the websites of dealers that are located close to you and then go to see the ’vans that look to meet your requirements at their showrooms.

Alternatively, you might find what you are looking for at an outdoor motorhome show – you can find details of this year’s upcoming shows at:

All the best – and good luck finding your perfect motorhome!
