Small Batch Campsite, Shropshire

-

One of our favourite sites, to the north of Church Stretton, had permanently closed. We were, therefore, ardently looking for another site in an equally lovely spot among the Shropshire

Hills. As soon as we saw Small Batch, nestled into the sides of Ashes Hollow, we knew we had a fantastic new catch.

What’s so great about Small Batch? The location for starters – beside a stream at the bottom of one of the many picturesque valleys that lead up to the Long Mynd. All these gorgeous valleys, and the popular Carding Mill, to name just a few, offer a choice of scenic circular walks.

Small Batch not only offered us the wonderful walking opportunities we wanted, it is also a short stroll from two pubs – the Ragleth Inn and the Green Dragon – both of which offer good food. Although Small Batch has 32 pitches, it has a peaceful and friendly atmosphere.

If it’s wet, you can catch the bus to one of my favourite English towns, Shrewsbury, and you can also get to Ludlow by bus (there’s related travel features in the April and December 2022, and June 2023 issues).

Church Stretton, with its supermarkets, independent small shops, small Thursday market and places to eat, is about two miles away, reached by bus or a very pleasant walk through woods and above a stream, directly from the site.

All the pitches have electric hook-up. They are mostly level and are all on grass with plenty of mats dotted about for site guests’ use in getting in and out of their ’vans. There are separate toilet and shower facilities, plus another toilet with washing facilities for everyone. The facilities appear rustic, but are kept very clean. A washing-up area is outside the facilities block (not covered) and mobile charging and ice pack freezing are in a small shed. Dogs are also welcome on site.

We found the phone signal at Small

Batch very weak. The

TV signal can, I’m told, be intermittent, but who needs that with such bucolic scenery on your doorstep?
