The ‘Alice’ class might be the ar­che­typal ‘Quarry Hun­slet’ but it was Gwynedd and Lil­lian of 1883 that were the first of the breed de­liv­ered to North Wales. They showed a marked im­prove­ment over the var­i­ous ‘pro­to­types’ of the 1870s and all sub­se­quent ver­sions fol­lowed the suc­cess­ful formula.
