MR-107: No. 36, National Coal Board black
USATC No. 6006 had a quiet war. It was built by Davenport as one of a batch of 20 in 1944, crossed the Atlantic… and after spending a period shunting at various docks in the UK, it went into store. The newly created National Coal Board plucked No. 6006 from Newbury Racecourse storage sidings in 1947 and moved it to Hartley Main Colliery in Northumberland, where it became No. 36. It joined two other ‘S100s’ in the NCB fleet (Nos. 32 and 35) but the US locomotives were not a success and they were withdrawn in 1953. Model Rail’s model accurately reflects No. 36 in its colliery condition, complete with reverse shaded lettering and numbers.
