BR built 4,638 20t brake vans between 1950 and 1962 (including six for London Transport) and, at the height of production, Darlington Works was able to build up to 20 a week. Its record was 44 in a week. Production switched to Ashford from 1961, but the most the Southern Region works could produce in a week was 13.
