ALTERNATIV­ES TO PAINTING BRASS PARTS

I’m adding etched brass detail parts to locomotive chassis, but priming and painting by hand threatens to hide the fine detail. Would a burnishing fluid work? Patrick Lassiter, by e‑mail

George says: Metal blacking fluids are available to suit various metals, from Carr’s and AK Interactiv­e. For best results, abrade and clean the parts before dipping them into the fluid, then rinse thoroughly with water. The darkness of the finish depends on how long the metal is submerged.
