George Dent, Deputy Editor

Model Rail (UK) - - Backscene -

Horse riding is one of my main passions and, thanks to the elevated position afforded by my equine buddy, Warrior, I recently noticed a derelict railway wagon on the other side of a hedge. Returning later, on foot, I couldn’t make out what it was due to the height and thickness of the vegetation. However, all was revealed on a more recent visit, thanks to winter’s effect on the deciduous hedge. Appropriately enough, it turned out to be a horsebox. Although I’m not certain of the exact type, it looks like an LMS design. It’s in quite a sorry state, unfortunately, but its position – out in the wilds of Cumbria – is certainly picturesque – and well off the beaten track! Modelling hours: 12 Note to self: A derelict horsebox in a farm field would make a great scenic feature – a change from the usual goods van.

George spotted this neglected horsebox in a remote Cumbrian field.
