HOW TO: APPLY DECALS TO CONTAINERS

-

I’m repainting some containers and have some C-rail Intermodal transfers to apply. How do I get them to sit onto the corrugated sides? Perry Adams, by e-mail

George says: When applying waterslide transfers to uneven surfaces, it helps to employ decal setting and softening solutions. Micro Set and Micro Sol, from Microscale, are the most popular. They greatly aid adhesion, as well as rendering the decal film more flexible, thus allowing the logos to form themselves to the profile of the surface.

It demands a careful, patient approach, as the softening process takes time and repeated application of the solution may be required, while gently pressing the transfer with a soft sponge.

To begin with, the model’s surface must be treated to a high-gloss finish, either by using gloss paint or applying clear gloss varnish. Work with one decal at a time and, while it soaks in a bowl of tepid water, brush the model’s surface with a little Micro Set solution.

After gently sliding the transfer into position, use a sponge to press it onto the surface before brushing on the Micro Sol softening fluid. After about 20-30 minutes, the decal will have softened sufficiently and, as it dries, it should mould itself to the surface’s contours. The process may need to be repeated until the decal conforms uniformly.

It takes a little practice to get things right but, if you’re not happy with the results, Micro Set can also be used to remove decals, by brushing it onto dried transfers and allowing it to soften the bond with the surface.

Once all of the transfers are in place, leave the model aside to dry for 24 hours before sealing the surface permanently with a coat of satin or matt varnish.

Be sure to read the decals’ instructions carefully as some brands recommend certain formulae of varnish, although acrylic clear coats are usually the safest. Some solvent-based clear coats may damage certain decals.
