IMPROVING PLANK DETAIL

-

Is there an easy way to improve the shallow plank relief on a plastic wagon kit?

George says: A profile cutting tool and steel rule are all you need to add greater definition to the plank detail on any plastic wagon.

A profile cutter features a hook-shaped blade which is designed to be drawn towards the user. It then ploughs a narrow furrow into the material. With the aid of a straightedge and a gentle action (and a fresh, sharp blade), it’s possible to remove a tiny amount of plastic at a time. Working gently and patiently, we can make repeated passes until the desired effect is achieved.

If you’re building a kit and decide that the moulded relief appears too shallow, then it’s easier to treat the parts flat on the workbench before assembly. It’s also possible to treat the interior walls and floor if desired.

If the wagon has already been assembled, it’s still possible to use the profile cutter, but extra care is needed to support the straightedge and prevent the blade from wandering off course. Working on the interior also becomes more difficult. Tidy up any rough edges with a sanding stick or fine abrasive paper.

The same processes can be highly effective on RTR wagon bodies, adding life to planked open wagons and vans. Subtlety is important, so don’t overdo it. Moreover, cutting deep channels in the plastic can weaken the integrity of the material and may even distort thinner wagon sides, especially if treating kit parts before assembly.

Profile cutting tools are available in the Olfa and Tamiya ranges and should be available from your local model or craft store.
