Lofty ambitions

My layout first started when we had our house extension done in 1990, in which we had the roof rafters altered so that the loft could accommodate a a layout. I started off with the four main running tracks, taken from a Hornby plan book. I had a couple of locomotives, coaches and wagons, and it stayed like this until 2017. It was then that I had the choice to forget about it or get into modelling and make something of it. I chose the latter.

Since restarting work I’ve done four extensions, including along the back wall where I’ve added a steam shed at the end and also some of the diesel area. Next came the front, where the diesels are all stored down the side, and finally over on the other side of the layout, next to the hill, is more sidings and a couple of locomotives awaiting their next duty.

Lighting was added in various stages and there is still more to do, but as it stands all the buildings are fitted with lights. The station, street, and Stobart depot are also fitted with working lights, which I bought from Layouts4u.

My layout doesn’t depict a particular era, but I purchased many of the locomotives for a particular reason. For example, Dumbleton Hall, in the Cotswolds, was where my son had his wedding reception, while other prototypes were local to me, working off Worcester (85A) or Gloucester (85B) sheds.

Having seen in the magazines that most layouts have names, in 2019 I decided to name it ‘Loft Junction’, and I am pleased to say that all the work was undertaken by myself from what I have picked up reading magazines such as Model Rail.
