IAIN RICE – AN OBITUARY
George Dent writes: Everyone at Model Rail was saddened to hear of the death of modeller and author Iain Rice, who passed away in early October, just as this issue was being finished. Iain had built a reputation as an expert modeller in many fields, writing key texts on subjects as diverse as metal locomotive kit construction, wagon detailing, layout design and track assembly. He also designed a versatile range of etched detailing kits, including those produced under the Mainly Trains brand, of which I must have built dozens over the years; his clear, hand-illustrated instructions were done in his own distinctive style and were instantly recognisable. There are a handful of folks who have played a significant role in my own development as a modeller, providing inspiration and shaping my practical aspirations; Iain was one such person. Although I couldn’t afford to buy his books in my early days, I still have reams of photocopies from several of his titles, made surreptitiously during one of my previous lives as a library assistant. Indeed, I can remember spending hours swotting up on his works in advance of my interview at Model Rail, back in 2004. Although we never did meet, in a quirk of serendipity, he did appear in the same BBC television programme as my wife. Having spoken to a number of modelling acquaintances who did know Iain or, like me, had been inspired by his writings, it’s clear what a lasting legacy he leaves behind. Therefore, we would like to thank Iain for his contribution to our hobby and for providing so much help and inspiration over the years. Furthermore, our sincere condolences go to his family and friends.
