MODEL RAIL VISITS… MODERN IMAGE O GAUGE EXHIBITION
George Dent writes: On March 25-26, Crewe Heritage Centre played host to an exhibition organised by Modern Image O Gauge (MIOG), a group of like‑minded individuals who wanted to deliver a model show tailored to those with an interest in post‑br steam ‘O’ gauge, with subjects ranging from 1970 right up to the present day.
It was set up as an informal space for modellers with similar interests to discuss their projects and experiences, initially via Facebook, before graduating to its first exhibition in Rawtenstall in 2019. After a Covid‑enforced hiatus, MIOG’S show returned in March 2022 at Crewe Heritage Centre and the same venue was used again this year. Supported by Avocet Travel, Locomotive Services Ltd and Direct Rail Services, a number of full‑size locomotives were also on display, including LSL’S 47712
Lady Diana Spencer and 37401
Mary Queen of Scots.
An excellent selection of layouts was on show, ranging from minimum space affairs to much larger projects, such as ‘Allerby’ (seen below and right), helping to illustrate the varied possibilities that ‘O’ gauge modelling can provide. With digital sound in abundance, the layouts certainly proved a hit with families and younger modellers.
In addition to the layouts, there was a useful range of trade support with retailers and manufacturers offering a diverse range of layout building essentials and rolling stock. Ellis Clark Trains had its new Wickham Trolley and trailers on sale, along with early painted samples of its forthcoming LMS ‘Black Five’ 4-6-0. Peco’s stand showcased its extensive range of 7mm scale track and lineside accessories, while Heljan’s Ben Jones was showing off samples of the re‑tooled Class 55 ‘Deltics’.
Demonstration stands allowed visitors to see for themselves what’s involved in working in ‘O’, including Model Rail’s Dave Lowery, who was on hand to share his expert knowledge and demonstrate the art of soldering.
Visitor numbers were healthy over both days, with tasty ‘Travellers Fare’ catering provided and Crewe’s existing collection of main line locomotives also on display, including the APT, HST power cars and 87035 Robert Burns in immaculate Virgin Trains livery. The show had a wonderfully friendly atmosphere and I’m really looking forward to returning to Crewe again in March 2024 for the next MIOG exhibition.
Anyone interested in signing up to MIOG’S Facebook group is welcome and the group also run a website containing lots of useful information, including practical articles and product reviews.
