Can you tell me anything about a film called Three For All, which I believe came out in the ’70s. I have a soundtrack on cassette but it has no details, though one track is The Troggs’ With A Girl Like You. Terry Lind, via e-mail

Fred says: Three For All – a 1975 film about a fictional band named Billy Beethoven – was a Dick James Music project to promote DJM recording artists. A lightweigh­t affair set in Spain, the film starred Paul Nicholas, Graham Bonnet, Christophe­r Neil and Robert Lindsay as the band members, and Richard Beckinsale as manager Jet Bone. A strong supporting cast included Adrienne Posta, Diana Dors, Arthur Mullard, Edward Woodward, and Dad’s Army stalwarts Ian Lavender and John Le Mesurier, while the film’s gatefold sleeve soundtrack LP featured tracks not only by Billy Beethoven but also The Troggs, Showaddywa­ddy, Kaplan Kaye, Mr Bloe, Granny, Rock Island Line and others. There was even advertisin­g on TV. But neither film nor album did much for those involved apart from director, Martin Campbell, who later shaped more notable production­s including GoldenEye, Casino Royale and Edge Of Darkness. Is there a recording of Trevor Burton’s Down Down Down that pre-dates Dave Edmunds’ incredible (1972) version? If not, how did Dave come across it? David Laing, Melbourne, Australia
