The Frightnrs
Nothing More To Say
Compelling first album from rocksteady four-piece formed in 2010.
The arrival of The Frightnrs’ debut album is bittersweet. Sweet, because it’s one of the most thrilling rocksteady albums to have been made since the genre emerged in the late ’60s; bitter because the group’s angelic voiced singer/songwriter Dan Klein passed away in June this year after being diagnosed with ALS. Produced by Victor ‘Ticklah’ Axelrod, a founding member of Sharon Jones And The Dap-Kings, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra and The Easy Star All-Stars, its 11 songs recreate the sounds of young Jamaica coming out of Studio 1 even though they were recorded in Brooklyn, the home of their label Daptone. Highpoints are many, from the creamy jamrock soul of Hey Brother to covers of Bob & Gene’s Gotta Find A Way and Saun & Starr’s Gonna Make Time, the first-named an exquisite endof-night smoocher, the second a genuine tearjerker.
