One of the few current R&B singers to rival those at the Daptone label, the Huntington Beach, Californian and former producer for Allah Las and Ural Thomas began making his own gritty R&B in 2011. His vocal and songwriting skills, then rooted in early soulsters Little Willie John and The 5 Royales, was captured perfectly on 2012’s Time’s All Gone and 2014’s Holly. His third album affirms his commitment to the authentic once again. The 10 songs, all originals, are drenched in huff-puff organ, recalling Ramsey Lewis Trio and Atlantic-era Ray Charles live; the rousing gospel girl harmonies could be The Sweet Inspirations singing behind Aretha Franklin in church. As for Waterhouse, he’s the firstclass entertainer, suited to both the sophisticated night club and sweaty revue.
